Often ignored or portrayed as a dolt in advertising, the family patriarch is finally getting his due. Kind and gentle dads are populating pitches this year for everything from General Mills' Cheerios and HyundaiSonata to Similac. Proud papas will also star in at least three Super Bowl spots -- for Unilever's Dove Men+Care, Toyota and Nissan -- all of which feature fatherhood prominently and positively. Dads are even getting a lot more notice from two brands marketed by "The Proud Sponsor of Mom." A new spot for Procter & Gamble's Swiffer WetJet shows a single dad playing with his little boy and cleaning up later.

For 28-year-old Jon Arrigo, who posted a picture on Reddit entitled “Just being a dad,” it looks pretty good: Playing video games, snuggling with one daughter while getting his toenails painted by the other. Arrigo posted the photo on December 2, and with nearly 2000 comments, it quickly became one of the top posts of the day.

Jamie Guarino, 34, is a snake handler based in Michigan. Recently, video emerged of Guarino's 14-month-old daughter Alyssa playing with his pet python snake Nay-Nay. Guarino argues that his daughter was in no danger when playing with the snake. "I was trying to show that snakes are not evil creatures, they can be a loving pet despite their bad reputation," Guarino said in the video.

One of the most extensive studies on prenatal hormones in first-time expectant parents has revealed that both men and women experience hormonal changes during pregnancy. The study, published in the American Journal of Human Biology, found significant prenatal declines in testosterone and estradiol in men, which researchers say suggests that impending fatherhood may cause men’s hormone levels to change.

Teaching Dads About Breastfeeding May Help Moms Stick To It

When new dads were involved in a breastfeeding support program at the hospital, new moms were more likely to still be breastfeeding three months later, a new study showed. “This is consistent with what is in the literature suggesting fathers play an important role in breastfeeding,” said lead author Jennifer Abbass-Dick of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Canada.
