You Need Time For Yourself Too, Dad

A lot of the articles that you read online focus on the mom. Now, don’t get us wrong, we understand why. Moms do a lot, but so do many dads out there and sometimes it seems as though this is overlooked. There are a lot of great dads out there who take their time with their kids, and have to balance their life around them just as much as a mom, and we know that you’re tired too.

More than this, it’s okay to admit that you’re tired and that you need some time for yourself. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for this, because you’re human too.

A Couple Of Hours Doing Nothing

Sometimes the best thing that you can give yourself is a couple of hours where you don’t do a single thing. Not one single thing. You can just sit there, or lay there, and relax. Let that tension go from your body, because it’s not doing you any favors. 

Now, we know that for some dads there just doesn’t seem to be any time for this, but those hours when the kids are in bed are your friend. Take that time to just be, to just exist. Sure, some people decide that they want to get those hours of sleep in and we do not blame them in the slightest because this is important. However, for others that time to be by themselves and to just exist in their own right is precious, even if it’s just for an hour, and it’s worth sacrificing that small bit of sleep for.

Plan Some Time With Your Friends

If you feel as though you never get time with your friends, and this is what you want, then you should plan some time with them. If you’re a single dad then this means finding someone to watch your kids which can be a pain in the behind, we know, but we promise that it’s worth it. If you’ve got family members who are happy to watch them while you go out for a few hours, that’s ideal. But, if not and you have to get a babysitter, as long as you have met them before and you’re comfortable with them, it’s not a big deal.

Of course, if you have a partner then it’s much easier to plan these things as you just have to let them know that you won’t be around and are they okay without you for a couple of hours. As long as you would do the same for them, we don’t see why this would be an issue.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be more than someone’s dad for a few hours and just enjoying life doing something with those that you care for.

Make Time For Your Hobby

Next, you should make sure that you are making time for your hobby. There are lots of different hobbies that you can explore here. It’s just a case of finding the option that is going to make you happy. In terms of the right hobby, think about what makes you happy, what helps you with your stress and what you will be able to fit into your personal time. 

Exercise Is Essential

You do need to make sure that you are exercising. Exercising is a great way to reduce levels of stress that you might be feeling in your life. You could head to the gym or you might want to think about setting up a gym space in the comfort of your home. 

Do Something You Love 

You should never feel as though you are unable to do the things that you love, but we know that many people do end up feeling this way. For example, if you want to get a tattoo, then you should book yourself in with a tattoo studio and get one, especially if this is something that you loved doing before you had your kids.

Or, if you have decided that you want to experience something new and you want to go sky diving or something similar, do it. You should never be afraid to make time for the things that you want to do as a person, not just as a parent. As long as your kids are safe and happy, there’s no reason you can’t be happy too.

Sit In Silence At The End Of The Day 

Sometimes, all you need at the end of the day is to sit in silence. When the loudness of everything has died down, and you are left alone just to sit in silence, or with the low noise of the TV in the background. Don’t assume that this isn’t something, because it is, and it’s something that a lot of parents crave after a day of fun and loudness with their kids.

Craving the silence doesn’t make you a bad person or a bad parent, it makes you normal.

Saying No Is Okay Sometimes

Last but certainly not least, you need to understand that sometimes it is okay to say no. When you’re a dad it can feel as though you always have to say yes to everyone. Yes, I can drive to that place, or yes, I will take you there, or yes, I can make time for this. In reality, you’re always going to have a limited amount of time to work with in your personal life and once you realise this, you can make sure that you understand what’s important and what the kids can forgive.
