5 Ways To Set a Positive Example For Your Kids

As a parent, it’s easy to find yourself barking orders that you fail to follow through with yourself. As the saying goes, “It’s easier said than done.”

However, telling your children what to do isn’t enough. In order for them to truly learn from what you teach them, it’s important that you lead by example.  A parent teaches best by exhibiting the best. Here are five of the best ways to set a positive example for your children.

Exhibit Bravery

Bravery is one of the best qualities you can instill in your children.  Bravery teaches people to step outside of their comfort zone and grow. Without taking risks and facing adversity, there’s no hope for advancing forward.

There are all sorts of ways that you can demonstrate bravery to your kids that you can do on a daily basis.

If they suffer an injury, you can show them how to breathe through the pain.  If they’re afraid of swimming, you can dive in first.

Show them the value in rising to the challenges that life presents.  It’s ok to fall, and it’s ok to show you’re afraid. The goal is to power through your fear.

Be Kind To Others

Empathy and compassion are two of the most important things a person can learn.  Remember, each time that you speak to someone a certain way, your kids are listening and watching.

Show them that the best way to handle challenges with others is to talk them through.  Yelling at others or speaking disrespectfully isn’t only less productive, it’s hurtful.

Give Back To the Community

Try to show your children the importance of contributing to society by helping your community.  Perhaps you can volunteer for an association or join an organization that reaches out to those in need.

Hard work doesn’t always have to be for a reward.  Sometimes it’s about helping others because it’s the right thing to do.

Value Family

Showing your children that the most important thing in life is family, will ensure that they keep that value.  Kids who feel neglected or ignored because their parents put work first tend to imitate that behavior as adults.

Therefore, make your moments with your kids count.  Savor your time together and enjoy their company.

Keep Promises

Your word is only as strong as your follow through.  Teach your children that if they say they’ll do something, that it’s as good as done.

When you promise your children something, that means you should make sure it always happens.  This won’t just benefit them in their personal relationships, but also in their professional lives.

If you cancel frequently or forget to do what you’ll say, they’ll see this as an acceptable form of behavior.
