Fun Family Activities For When We Start To Unfreeze

After a long winter, when things finally unfreeze, there will be so many possibilities for fun family activities! Spring is a wonderful time to head outdoors and soak in the vitamin D you’ve missed throughout the winter.

If you’re struggling to find things to do this spring, check out this list of fun family activities for when we start to unfreeze.

1. Go On a Hike

One of the best times to go for a hike is when spring arrives! The air is still a bit cool, but it’s refreshing after a long winter of being indoors. There are an endless amount of trails to choose from, so this can be a recurring activity. Plus, it’s a great way to bond as a family and encourage each other along the path.

When you go on a hike, you’re getting exercise, exposing yourself to wildlife and getting away from screens. Whether you go for a shorter hike or challenge your family to hills, there will be smiles and laughter. If your children are apprehensive about going on a “hike,” call it an adventure.

2. Visit a State or National Park

Another way to enjoy nature is by heading to either a state or national park. These are excellent learning experiences. Your family will get to see nature and maybe even new wildlife as many animals have young ones with them once the ground thaws. It's a fantastic way to connect with wildlife and create lasting memories with your family.

You’ll see the world through your children’s eyes. They’ll ask so many questions and want to learn everything that the earth has to offer. Make sure you take a camera with you to capture those moments but don’t get stuck behind it so you can experience the beauty of nature with your own eyes!

3. Fly Kites

How often did you fly kites as a kid? Head out with your kids on a windy day with either homemade kites or one from the store and spend a couple of hours watching them fly. Usually, in the spring, there are no shortages of windy days.

No matter how old your kids are, they’ll enjoy watching how high the kites can fly up into the sky. Of course, you may have some hiccups, like a kite that blows away or a broken string, so bring an extra just in case. Compete with your family to keep your kite in the air the longest.

4. Start Planting a Garden

There’s no better time than spring to start planting a garden with your family! Once the ground thaws, gather seeds, fertilizers and water and plant whatever you like. It’s an excellent way to teach your children things like responsibility, nutrition and reasoning.

Allow your children to pick out a vegetable, fruit or flower to grow. Provide them with the tools so they know how to take care of it. Once they harvest it, they’ll have a sense of accomplishment, and you can share in that excitement together.

5. Have a Picnic

Gather a blanket, basket, food and drinks and head out to a park or even your backyard for a family picnic. You can pick a fun location with wide open fields for a day of field games and picnicking. It’s a time to spend outdoors and bond as a family.

Make sure you pack plenty of extra snacks, like chips, jerky and fruits, for your children to eat throughout the day if you’re spending a day at the park. They’ll love the freedom and fun of being away from home.

6. Go Camping

You might as well make the most out of the first few weeks of spring by going camping. Emerge out of the comfort of your bed and take your family on a weekend camping trip. It’s another perfect way for your children to have fun and learn a lot about the outdoors.

Unplug from the screens and connect with nature as a family. You may learn new things about your children that you didn’t know before. Plus, you’ll be exposed to fresh air, and your children can grow in confidence as they explore the outdoors.

7. Craft Decorations for Spring

For those rainy spring days, you’re probably going to want to stay indoors. As everything starts to unfreeze, you can turn those rainy days into craft days. There are so many fun crafts that you can do as a family, like painting pots for new flowers or building a birdhouse.

Let your kids show their creativity during these crafting days. They’ll love seeing their artwork hung up around the house.

8. Visit a Petting Zoo

If your children love animals, visit a petting zoo! Petting zoos allow people to see and pet adorable animals. You could spend a whole day there and participate in any activities the petting zoo has to offer.

Not all petting zoos may be open, so if there’s a local farm, you could call and ask if you can go as a family to explore the farm. Farms have animals and plants for your family to see and learn about. Alternatively, you could search for animal experiences near me if you're also not near a farm, or if you want to interact with both cute and cuddly animals and perhaps some from the insect and/or reptile world.
