Spring Activities For Your Family

Spring is quickly approaching, and it’s a great time of year to start getting outside again and enjoying the warmer weather. Your kids will love helping you come up with ideas for things to do, but it can also be nice to surprise them with activities and days out that they don’t know about. Below are some suggestions for days out, hobbies and activities you and your kids can look forward to in the spring.

Plant a veggie garden

If you want your kids to eat their veggies at the dinner table, one of the most effective ways to get them excited about the concept is to have them grow what’s on their plate. Spring is the right time to start planting seeds for growing fruits and veggies over the summer months, and the process of preparing the garden and putting those seeds in the ground is fun in itself. It’s an activity you can do together as a family on the weekends and after school, and if you don’t have a garden, you can still grow many veggies in pots such as tomatoes and lettuce.

Sign the kids up to a club

You might not have the same days off together, but that doesn’t mean that the members of the family who are off school need to sit at home bored. Holiday clubs are a great solution, providing kids with a fun place to spend their time off from school where they can take part in a wide variety of activities, make new friends and build their skills outside of the classroom. Holiday clubs take place during the school breaks, and it will give them something to look forward to in the lead-up to their time off from school.

Go camping

Get outdoors and enjoy nature with your kids with a camping trip. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate adventure – you can set up camp in your back garden (a good option if the weather is still a little unpredictable) or you can make a weekend of it and travel a little further afield. During the day, you can take part in nature hikes, seeking out the local flora and fauna and seeing what you can spot along the way, and in the evenings, you can enjoy stories and laughs around the campfire with hot chocolate and marshmallows.

Start a family book club

Book clubs are a great way to build up your kids’ reading and comprehension abilities, but it also gives you all the chance to discuss different ideas and themes, which makes the process of reading the book even more enjoyable. Simply pick a book that all of you can read comfortably, without struggling, and then you can either read it together as a group or individually and come back together to talk through what you all thought. Alternatively, you could all listen to it aloud on audiobook and then talk through the plot and characters after each chapter.

Get on your wheels

After a winter stored away in the cupboards or garage, spring is the time to dust off your bikes, roller-skates and skateboards and air them out. It’s excellent exercise, gives you the chance to get some fresh air and is fun too. Head to your local park, cycle track or roller rink during the public skating hours and spend some time together working up a sweat and making memories.

Join a local sports club

If you’re a family of sports fanatics, why not join a local club and play for yourselves? There are countless sports you and the kids can enjoy, whether it’s football, basketball, swimming or dance classes, and you’re sure to find activities for all ages that the whole family can have fun with. You’ll get some exercise, something most of us need after a winter stuck indoors due to the cold weather, and you’ll build your strength, stamina and coordination too. Sports clubs are also a great way to meet like-minded people, so both parents and kids can make new friends.

Final thoughts

With the weather warming up, half-term breaks from school and outdoor activities back on the agenda, spring is the perfect time to start thinking about ways you can enjoy some quality time as a family.
