Assault is a common crime that happens in the US. This is backed by the FBI's 2025 crime statistics that show one aggravated assault happens about every 38.8 seconds in the U.S. Aggravated assault is the FBI's label for attacks involving a serious injury or a weapon. Simple assaults, which involve no serious injury and no weapon, are reported in a separate category. State law also tends to split assault into lesser and more serious charges, so the charge listed at arrest can change after the facts are reviewed. Knowing which charge applies makes the rest of the process easier to follow.
In fiscal year 2024, the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Child Support Enforcement program served 12.2 million children and collected $29.5 billion in child support. Families received 97 percent of the recovered amount. The other 3 percent was used to reimburse public assistance programs.
